When it comes to an anti-aging diet, healthy fats are a must-have and a great way to supplement daily facial exercises. Omega-3s are one of my favorites because they do wonders for your skin and fill you up for longer periods of time. Eating foods like eggs, avocados, salmon and tuna imparts a healthy, youthful glow while boosting production of both collagen and elastin. Healthy fats also reduce inflammation that leads to fine lines and wrinkles.
In the ‘90s it was all about the low-fat diet, which ironically led to an increase in obesity and probably more wrinkles! This is because these “low fat” foods were loaded with simple carbs and refined sugars to make them taste better. Calories were also sky high and no one was counting. Fortunately, experts realized the trend was unhealthy and the low fat diet fad became a thing of the past.
Healthy fats have made a major comeback in recent years. There have been many studies and publications touting their benefits—even Time Magazine featured an image of butter on its cover “Eat Butter. Scientists labeled fat the enemy. Why they were wrong.” I never gave up on fats because I could tell they helped hydrate my skin from the inside out and plump up fine lines and wrinkles.
While it’s essential to practice moderation with all aspects of our diet, healthy fats need to be consumed regularly. They improve heart health, help us eat less and promote healthy, younger looking skin. Healthy fats have also been shown to be mood boosters. Some excellent sources include the favorites I mention above as well as nuts, chia seeds, dark chocolate, extra virgin olive oil and fatty fish.
Combine healthy fats with a well-balanced diet that includes lean protein and antioxidant-rich produce. Try to avoid refined sugars and carbs as much as possible but go ahead and indulge every once in a while so that you never feel deprived. The result will be beautiful skin and a happy, healthy heart.
