3 Pillowcases for Improving Beauty Sleep

facial exercisesWhen we’re awake, we can do facial exercises and use skin care products to combat aging and look our best. Yet the work doesn’t stop there—beauty sleep helps our skin repair and rejuvenate. However, if we don’t sleep in the optimal position—on our backs—sleep can wreak havoc. This can appear in the form of deep creases and lines caused by the position you sleep in and the wrong type of pillowcases. Frizzy hair and breakage is another casualty of what should be beauty sleep. Since we spend almost a third of our lives sleeping, shouldn’t we make the most of this precious time?

Until now, the majority of pillowcases were made of cotton. Since it is naturally absorbent, cotton actually draws moisture away from the skin. So all those expensive products actually get absorbed by the pillowcase while your skin just gets drier. The good news is, there is a bevy of pillowcases that target our beauty concerns and help you wake up looking fresh and dewier than before.

1. Silk Pillowcases

A longstanding favorite of the beauty community is the silk pillowcase. Unlike those made of cotton, silk pillowcases help your skin retain its moisture and prevent the sleep lines that result in permanent wrinkles over time. Silk is naturally cool, so you’ll perspire less, which helps those with oily skin avoid breakouts. It is also softer on your hair so there will be no friction to cause breakage or split ends.

2. Satin Pillowcases

The benefits of satin are very similar to those of silk. Unlike cotton, which pulls and doesn’t let your skin slide as you move in your sleep, satin allows it to move. Like silk, satin helps skin retain moisture and doesn’t absorb the products you apply before bed. Since satin is so smooth, it doesn’t cause hair breakage or split ends.

3. Copper-Infused Pillowcases

A new type of pillowcase on the market is Iluminage‘s copper-infused model. It’s made from polyester entwined with copper fibers that have been shown to boost the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Studies show that you should see more radiant skin and a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles after four weeks of use.

5 Sun Protection Tips

facial exercisesSummer is around the corner. It evokes thoughts of vacations, bare feet and idling the days away sunbathing. Yet as relaxing as the latter sounds, it brings with it dangerous exposure to UV rays.  Too much of these dangerous rays causes signs of aging, sun damage and skin cancer. Since it’s unrealistic to avoid the great outdoors altogether, we’re providing some excellent tips to protect your skin during summertime. Add these tips to your regimen of daily facial exercises and you’ll keep your complexion in gorgeous condition for the most skin-baring season of all.

1. Wear Sunscreen Religiously

One of the most important things you can do for your skin is to wear sunscreen every single day, rain or shine. Apply it 20 to 30 minutes before you head outdoors and re-apply every few hours as needed. That’s right—bring it with you everywhere. Don’t just apply it to your face—apply it to your neck, decollete, hands, arms and everywhere you don’t want sun damage to appear. Try my Protective Sunblock SPF 30 for light, velvety protection.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

Drink water all day long, especially during hot summer days when you’re chance of getting dehydrated is higher. This helps you flush the toxins from your body and keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. When your body isn’t properly hydrated, it zaps the moisture from your skin and hair, making them look dull, dry and generally lackluster.

3. Exfoliate

Exfoliate regularly to eliminate the buildup of dead skin cells. If your skin is dry, aim for 1 to 2 times per week and 2 to 3 if your skin is oily. Doing a Face Lift to Go treatment every week is a great way to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin. Retinol helps keep your skin exfoliated as well.

4. Eat Right

Increase your intake of antioxidant-rich foods this time of year, especially those containing vitamin C and E, which can help reverse sun damage. Load up on fruits and vegetables, since they will help keep you hydrated. In addition, consume lots of lycopene-rich foods such as tomatoes, watermelon, grapefruit, papaya, guavas and red pepper—the powerful carotenoid helps protect your skin against harmful UV rays.
