As enjoyable as Thanksgiving is, it can be detrimental to our waistline if we’re not careful. The good news is, if you employ the following strategies, you can avoid holiday weight gain and still enjoy yourself.

1. Work it out. While it can be tempting to stray from your workout regimen during the holiday weekend, it’s one of the worst things you can do. Hit the gym or an exercise class every possible day this weekend, and if you’re traveling, make time to go for a run or walk. It’s essential for burning some of the extra calories you may consume and will keep your metabolism revved. Get the whole family involved by playing a game of football during the day or going for a post-dinner walk. You’ll get an energy boost and will be more mindful about overindulging during the big meal.

2. Focus on protein and veggies. Most weight loss clinics promote a low carb diet in general, and Thanksgiving is an excellent day to practice that mentality. Load your plate with protein-rich turkey and veggies with dietary fiber to fill you up. Leave a little bit of room on your plate for small tastes of the more fattening sides.

3. Bring a healthy dish. Whether you are hosting the entire meal or bringing a side, make at least one healthy alternative with less fattening ingredients. Nine times out of ten, no one will notice the difference and you’ll have a healthy option to fill up on.
