6 Ways to Prevent Wrinkles

facial exercisesThere are so many gimmicks in the marketplace that claim to reverse and prevent wrinkles—it’s easy to get caught up and want to try every new thing. Yet if you really want to make a difference, you need to make anti-aging a part of your lifestyle. When you incorporate habits like daily facial exercises, an antioxidant-rich diet and sleeping in a beneficial position, you’ll see a marked difference in a short amount of time. With a little bit of strategy and commitment, you can truly reverse the signs of aging and rock a healthy, youthful glow all year long.

1. Protect Your Skin From the Sun

One of the best anti-aging practices is to avoid the sun altogether. Its powerful ultraviolet (UV) UV rays cause damage in the forms of fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and skin cancer. UV rays also cause collagen breakdown, which leads to skin’s loss of firmness and elasticity. Apply SPF protection every single day and wear hats and sun-protective clothing whenever possible to avoid unsightly sun damage.

2. Facial Exercises

One of the best tried-and-tested methods for younger looking skin is daily facial exercises. They boost circulation, stimulate collagen production, improve skin tone and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Facial exercises offer natural looking results that dermal fillers simply cannot compete with.

3. Sleep on Your Back

The best sleeping position for anti-aging is on your back. When you sleep on your stomach or your side, you smash your skin into the pillow and cause creases. Eventually, these creases become wrinkles. Sleeping on your back also prevents wrinkling on your décolletage.

4. Exfoliate Regularly

Regular exfoliation removes the dead skin cells that clog pores and draw attention to wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Exfoliation imparts a smoother texture and brightens skin.

5. Eat an Antioxidant-Rich Diet

Consume a diet with lots of fruits, veggies and lean protein such as fatty fish like salmon for its vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acid content. Vitamin C is a powerful anti-aging tool, so consume lots of citrus and vegetables and take an Ester-C supplement if necessary.

6. Use Collagen-Boosting Products

Use products with ingredients that boost collagen, such as retinoids, vitamin C and glycolic acid. Some excellent choices are my Retinol Skin Conditioner and High Density Vitamin C Serum.

Why Sunscreen is Essential All Year Round

facial exercisesClients of both my advanced skin care program and facial exercises always ask what the most important anti-aging product is. The answer is easy: sunscreen. People often mistakenly think that since summer is over, they can store their sunscreen for the season. This is the worst mistake you can make—sunscreen is essential all year long, rain or shine.

The sun emits three types of ultraviolet (UV) rays: UVA, UVB and UVC. While UVC are the least talked about, they are the most powerful. Thankfully, the planet’s atmosphere shields us from most of these harmful rays. However, we are not naturally protected against UVA and UVB rays, which cause everything from sunburns and sun spots to fine lines, wrinkles and melanoma.

While UVA and UVB rays are strongest during the summer, the sun never powers down. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, 40 percent of these powerful UV rays can reach the earth on a cloudy day. This means they can cause unsightly and serious issues any time of year. UVB are the stronger of the two—they can immediately burn the skin’s top layers. In extreme cases, these burns can result in peeling, blistering and skin cancer. While the surface damage causes by UVA rays seems weaker, they affect the skin’s deeper layers. Too much UVA exposure causes long-term damage, including deep wrinkles, uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. Worse yet, they cause various forms of carcinoma and melanoma.

Sunscreen is imperative all the time—even when you’re leaving the house just for a few minutes. It only takes about 20 minutes of sun exposure for skin to incur damage. You’re not safe in your car either. UVA rays can penetrate glass windows, so you need to wear sunscreen for the car ride. It’s very common to see clients with uneven skin tone or sun damage on the side of their face that normally faces the car window.

You can reduce the risk of sun damage and discoloration all year long with one of these two great choices: our Protective Sunblock SPF 30 or DNA’s Ultimate Sol Protection SPF 28. Neither of these lightweight sunscreens cause breakouts and they both provide excellent protection against the sun’s dangerous rays. Wearing hats and sunglasses can also help prevent UV damage and the squinting that causes wrinkles.
