SKIN BITES
Recently, various reports have touted the many benefits of Vitamin D. Some sources even claim that you can get your daily requirement of Vitamin D by spending just 10-20 unprotected minutes a day in the summer sun. While I don’t dispute the benefits of Vitamin D, I don’t agree you should opt for the “free” kind. June is the time of year when many people start spending a lot of time outdoors in the sun. We all know that overexposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays can wreak havoc on the skin, and over time can create a number of problems, including age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, thinner more translucent skin, broken capillaries and even skin cancer.
In fact, the rays are so strong in the summer months that even a little time spent in the sun can cause damage to the skin. Remember what Dr. Perricone said ~ “When we walk out into the noonday sun during the summer, within five minutes the sunlight creates free radicals in the skin. This results in an inflammatory cascade that accelerates the aging process, causing wrinkles, pre-cancers and cancer as well as discoloration.”

Keep yourself and your family safe and by following these sun safety tips:
- Avoid overexposure to the sun during peak hours between 10 am and 4 pm during Daylight Savings Time and 9 am and 3 pm during Standard Time.
- Wear a broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen every day. Apply it as your last product to your face, neck, arms and tops of your hands if spending most of the day indoors.
- If spending time outdoors, apply generously to all exposed areas. Then reapply approximately every two hours, even on cloudy days, and particularly after swimming or sweating.
- Remember that physical sunscreens act like tiny mirrors reflecting the sun’s UV rays before they can actually penetrate the skin. Sunscreens that form physical barriers are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Today’s formulas are no longer white and blend into the skin more. In fact, my own formula spreads quite easily and is non-irritating. I have been using it for 25 years and have no brown spots on my hands or face.
- Remember to use caution near water and sand, especially since they reflect the sun’s harmful rays.
- Seek the shade whenever possible or use an umbrella.
- Avoid tanning beds altogether ~ THEY ARE NOT SAFE!!
- Get your Vitamin D safely through a healthy diet and supplements.
- Still want that sun kissed glow? Reach for bronzers or self tanners!

Private Classes on SKYPE
I get numerous phone calls on a daily basis from clients who have all kinds of questions about topics from A to Z. Unfortunately, I don't have time to adequately cover the answers to random questions on the spur of the moment. However, I do have time to devote to clients who have made an appointment to talk to me on myriad issues. Consequently, I have instituted my Conversation with Carole program, where clients can make an appointment to talk to me, one-on-one, for an hour. During an appointment, I can cover topics like skin care, hair styles, make-up, vitamins for energy and health, how to walk in 5 inch heels all day, how to get up at 4 am and work and play until 10 pm (at 64) and not be tired. We can talk about how to get a sleek, smooth and toned face and body and maintain it for a lifetime. We can talk about anything you want to discuss. You choose the topic and we're on.
What has transpired since I instituted the Conversation with Carole is really an amazing personal connection with a great many of my long term clients. It's been a wonderful experience to actually be able to converse, one-on-one, with clients who have been using my products for many years. Clients who have the same goals and aspirations as I. At age 64, I find that personal connections are ever so important. I appreciate you all.
The cost for a one-on-one hour chat is $150.. I have information that will definitely change your life for the better and I'm looking forward to sharing a lifetime of knowledge with you. So make a list of questions and give me a call. Book

FACERCISE on the Web
Dear Carole,
I can never thank you enough for squeezing me into your busy schedule! I really needed to have the private Skype lesson with you to figure out what I was doing wrong with a few of the exercises. Who knew it could be so easy once you were able to see and help me correct my mistakes! It’s been only three weeks, but I can see the changes coming already. My jawline has firmed up nicely, my eyes look more open and alert and my lips are starting to look much more defined. Thanks again for being so patient with me and for fitting me in!
Best wishes,
Anna Smith,
Lansing, MI
One hour private FACERCISE classes are now available via Skype. This is an invaluable tool when mastering the FACERCISE regimen. Many FACERCISERS do the exercises incorrectly, even though they have read and re-read my book or purchased my DVDs. With a session via webcam, you will be able to see me perform the exercises and I can see your face and technique and correct anything you are doing wrong. Also, I can instruct you on some new exercises which are not in the book or on the DVD. The price for a one hour session is $225, and it includes a DVD. Call for available appointment times.
Remember to keep FACERCISING each day ~ twice a day to look your very best! Always remember that the results of a Facelift, no matter how good, are only temporary and will need to be repeated down the road. Facelifts, Liquid Facelifts, Chemical Peels and Botox are also very costly and all have inherent risks. The Facercise Program targets the 57 muscles of the face and neck and allows you to create positive changes that can be built upon over time. Keep a photo log of yourself to track your progress to help keep you motivated! Remember, the Ultimate Facercise Super Set gets you through the entire program in less than eight minutes. That’s not much of a time commitment to create and maintain the face you want!

Private FACERCISE Classes
Carole Maggio Day Spa offers private FACERCISE classes for men and women. Before & after photos are taken at the onset of the course and the client returns in a month’s time for after pictures. During the private Facercise class, there’s an emotional connection that occurs when the client and I meet, and it instills not only a desire, but a discipline to remain focused and consistent. Also, meeting them face-to-face allows me to concentrate on their specific facial needs and create a personalized program for them. I can also make instant corrections regarding body posturing, resistance, visualization techniques, etc.

In July of 2009, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a branch of the World Health Organization, determined that tanning devices are “carcinogenic to humans.” A recent study from the University of Minnesota revealed that using any type of tanning bed for any period of time may increase the chances of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, by 74 percent. This is in sharp contrast to past studies that showed that using tanning beds increased the likelihood of developing melanoma by 15 percent. Additionally, the study found that frequent tanning bed users (those who logged more than 50 hours of tanning bed use) were 2.5 to 3 times more likely to develop melanoma compared to those who never used indoor tanning beds.
An adjunct professor of dermatology at the University, Dr. Cindy Firkins-Smith, noted a sharp increase in younger women with the disease in her own practice, stating, “It’s not at all unusual to see women in their 20s with melanoma.” Dr. Firkins-Smith stated that the number of patients with melanoma in her practice has “increased astronomically” in her 20 years of practice. She added that she feels the overall increase is directly related to the rise in the popularity of tanning beds in the early 80’s.
Perhaps this study is what spurred the FDA advisory panel meeting in March of this year. The panel included representatives from the Skin Cancer Foundation, American Cancer Society, American Academy of Dermatologists, along with melanoma survivors. The purpose of the meeting was to determine whether new restrictions and bans for people under the age of 18 are necessary. As a result, the panel recommended that the FDA reclassify tanning beds, placing them in the same category as medical devices, such as X-ray machines. That way, the FDA could enforce limits on the levels of radiation that the devices emit. One panel member in agreement with the proposal, Dr. Michael Olding stated, “Given the absence of any demonstrated benefit, I think it’s an obligation for us to ban artificial tanning for those under 18.” Of course, Tanning Bed Association representative, John Overstreet chimed in, noting the cancer-fighting benefits of Vitamin D, which is produced by the skin with moderate UV exposure. He stated, “The latest science is contradictory. A study out just two weeks ago from the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center found that UVA light does not cause melanoma."
Don’t kid yourselves; a tan is the skin’s natural response to injury. There is no such thing as a “safe tan.” In fact, much of the damage and skin cancers we are seeing after age 40 are in fact due to the radiation damage (particularly the sunburns) that occurred in our youth. Remember, protect your skin by wearing sunscreen every day and get your Vitamin D from food sources and supplements.

As it turns out, eating certain foods can actually provide your skin with an internal sunscreen to help defend against sunburn, prevent skin damage and even reduce the risk of skin cancer. A University of Michigan study determined that the ingredient lycopene and other antioxidants found in tomatoes actually helped protect the skin against sunburn. In fact, tomato paste contains even higher levels of lycopene than raw tomatoes. Other foods that contain lycopene include: watermelon, pink grapefruit, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, salmon and egg yolks. It is also recommended that you eat five servings a day of foods rich in carotenoids, such as melons, apricots, carrots, red peppers, squash and sweet potatoes. Eating green, leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach and chard can also help protect the skin from squamous cell cancer by up to 50 percent. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like herring, mackerel, salmon, trout, sardines, and walnuts also help prevent sun damage and skin cancer. Green tea is rich in polyphenols and drinking just two cups a day can reduce your skin cancer risk by 30 percent. Including these foods in your diet will keep you healthy and provide an additional measure of protection against sunburn, sun damage and skin cancer. But remember, they are not a substitute for daily application of sunscreen and practicing other sun protection methods.

Since June is the time of year when many brides will be baring their arms, I thought this article was timely and worth repeating.
Keratosis Pilaris. Every heard of it? Probably not. Have you ever had it? Probably. Keratosis Pilaris (KP) is a very common skin condition often referred to as "chicken skin." If you have keratosis pilaris, you are not alone. Worldwide, KP affects an estimated 40 to 50 percent of the adult population and approximately 50 to 80 percent of all adolescents. Varying in degree, cases of KP can range from minimal to severe.
Most people with KP don't know they have it. While KP resembles goosebumps, it is characterized by the appearance of small, rough bumps on the skin. Primarily, it appears on the back and outer sides of the upper arms, but can also occur on thighs and buttocks or any body part except palms or soles. (Often confused with acne.)
KP is unsightly but completely harmless. KP tends to be worse during the winter months or other times of low humidity when the skin dries out. It may also occur and/or worsen among pregnant women or show up after childbirth.
I have clients who have come to me with this problem. Fortunately, I do have a product which has proven successful in alleviating the symptoms of KP. It’s a cleanser called KP Free that helps control the condition. A client of mine sent me a picture of her arm on her wedding day, clearly showing KP on her arms. She wanted to let me know how much this product has changed her life. She told me, “I wish I had known about this product before my wedding day.” She is no longer hesitant to wear sleeveless dresses because the KP Free cleanser has cured her “goose bumps.”

LIP SERVICE
(Success stories from
home and abroad)
Hi Carole,
I am 32 years old and I have been suffering with Keratosis Polaris on my face for many years. I had been going to my dermatologist for treatments but nothing he gave me really seemed to work. In fact, they just seemed to dry out my skin even more. A friend of mine told me that she had read in your newsletter that your creamy face cleanser could help. What has transpired is truly amazing to me. The affected area (my cheeks) has cleared up entirely and my skin now looks amazing. I am so thrilled and thankful to have found your product. I can’t wait to try some of your other products to see how they work!
Kind regards,
Elizabeth Stafford, Denver, CO
Dear Ms. Maggio,
I have been using your Facercise program for about 10 years now. I always enjoyed doing the exercises and felt I’ve been able to keep my face looking pretty youthful looking all these years. I decided to order your new program and I couldn’t be happier. My results seem even more dramatic than before and that is something that just didn’t seem possible to me. My entire face is more lifted and firm and the best part is it only takes eight minutes twice a day! Thanks for continuing to improve upon a good thing!
Sincerely,
Becky Watson, Baton Rouge, LA
Hi Carole,
I just wanted to write and tell you how No Lipo Lipo has truly changed the way I feel about my body. I was so embarrassed by the cellulite on my thighs that I used to go to the gym wearing long sweat pants, even on warm days. I cannot believe how in just six months time, I have been able to totally eliminate all the lumps and bumps on my thighs and firmed up my entire body. Your system is so easy to use, works wonders, and I have the body to prove it! No more sweat pants for me. Thanks for all you do.
Sincerely,
Monica Carrino, Santa Monica, CA
